About the Foundation

In order to develop private financial support for the University of New Mexico, the University's Board of Regents established the UNM Foundation Inc. in 1979, and the Foundation began operations in the spring of 1980.

Although the Foundation exists solely as the nonprofit arm of the University, it operates independently with its own board of directors. Comprised of up to 45 members, the board includes the University president, provost, and vice presidents for Advancement, Business and Finance, and the Health Sciences Center.

In accordance with University policy, all private gifts are received through the Foundation, which has the responsibility for managing contributions to all UNM programs. Gifts to the UNM Foundation are tax-deductible.

The University is able to enhance UNM programs and projects for the benefit of its students through the support it receives from individuals, corporations, and other foundations.
