lobo-clubUniversity of New Mexico Athletics is pleased to announce the launch of the Lobo Club’s “Drive to 5,000.”  The purpose of this campaign is to grow Lobo Club membership to an all-time high and put the University of New Mexico at the top of the Mountain West Conference in athletics fundraising.  “Our annual scholarship cost is one of the largest expenses that the Athletics Department incurs,” said Paul Krebs, Vice President for Athletics at UNM.  “The money that Lobo Club members donate to the Lobo Scholarship Fund is so important for the continued growth and success of Lobo Athletics, and we cannot continue to compete at a championship level without the support of our Lobo Club members.”

In an effort to increase donations and expand our memberships to 5,000 by the end of 2014, the Lobo Club has developed a “Drive to 5,000” campaign video and redesigned its website: The website now includes new features such as a scrolling Twitter feed, a current membership ticker, updated maps and ticket/parking request forms, mobile capability and an enhanced online giving portal to make donating as easy as possible.

There are currently over 4,200 members of the Lobo Club – the Gateway to Giving for UNM Athletics – who make tax-deductible contributions of $50 or more annually.  These members raise approximately $3 million per year in community based support that goes to offset the total cost of student-athlete scholarships at UNM, which is projected to be $4.3 million this upcoming year.  UNM is currently #2 in the Mountain West in total members behind Wyoming and #4 in scholarship fund dollars raised behind UNLV, San Diego State, and Boise State.

“As it says in our video, ‘We Are New Mexico’ and we need our alumni and fans throughout the entire state to show their state pride and rally behind this campaign by joining the Lobo Club today,” said Executive Director Lee De Leon. “So many of our teams are winning conference championships on an annual basis and we need our fundraising efforts to be at the top of our conference as well if we want to continue this success.”

As part of the Lobo Club’s “Drive to 5,000” campaign, the annual Ambassador Program kicks off this Wednesday, April 24.  A group of 60 Ambassadors will be volunteering their time and effort over the next two months to renew current donors and recruit new members.  The chair for this year’s Ambassador Program is Lynn Mosher, owner of Mosher Enterprises, Inc.  “Although I am not a UNM grad, I believe in supporting our local university and know how important a successful Athletics Department is to this community,” said Mosher.  “I want to help the Lobo Club grow to 5,000 members because I know that it will ensure the future success and financial stability of UNM Athletics.”

The Lobo Scholarship Fund money that the Lobo Club raises makes a significant impact on the lives and experiences of UNM student-athletes.  Former football player and current Senior Vice President at Morgan Stanley Ryan Mummert said, “I came to UNM from California on a football scholarship, received a great education and fell in love with the state of New Mexico.  My wife and our two kids live here in Albuquerque now and I am blessed to have a successful career in the financial services industry.  I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for my scholarship and that’s why I give back to the Lobo Club.”

The Athletics Department invites you to participate in the Lobo Club’s “Drive to 5,000” and make an impact on our 450 student-athletes by joining today.  If you are already a member, then you can still help us reach our goal by: 1) inviting your family, friends and colleagues to join, 2) sharing the video and website via email, or 3) sharing the video and website via social media.
