New Horizons Luncheon Celebrates Donor Generosity

UNM’s New Horizons Society members were celebrated on Tuesday, March 20th as they joined UNM President David Schmidly, UNM Foundation staff, UNM Foundation Board of Trustees and academic leaders for the annual New Horizons Society luncheon.  New Horizons Society (NHS) members are forward-minded friends and alumni of the university who have included UNM in their estate plans.

President Schmidly welcomed NHS Members and prospective members, and thanked them for the benefits their gifts will bring to university students, departments and programs.  Following the President’s remarks, Sheila Hard, Director of Gift Planning, announced that since the beginning of the UNM Changing Worlds Capital Campaign in 2006, donors have pledged more than $85 million in planned gifts to UNM, and expressed the appreciation of all for their foresight and generosity.

The Program continued as UNM School of Law Dean Kevin Washburn and Professor Emeritus, Dr. Brian Hansen (Theater and Dance) testified to the incredible generosity of donors that has directly impacted the university in substantial ways.  Members of the New Horizons Society support comprehensive university efforts ranging from Lobo athletics to the College of Fine Arts – from the Summer Law Institute to the School of Medicine.

Concluding the afternoon was student speaker, Tracy Buckler. Tracy is a UNM Presidential Scholarship recipient and a senior, graduating this May with a degree in English.  Tracy captivated attendees with her many accomplishments as a student, such as writing a novel as her honor’s thesis and teaching Shakespeare to home-school students. She emphasized that her success is directly tied to the generosity of her sponsors whose gift benefits the Presidential Scholarship Fund, and thanked those donors attending for their generosity on behalf of all scholarship recipients.

“It is a privilege to welcome New Horizons Society members and to honor them for what they are doing,” Sheila Hard later remarked. “All too often, we learn of donors’ generosity when it is too late to say ‘thank you’.”
