Smith’s Donates $200,000 to UNM Children’s Hospital
Smith’s Food and Drug has donated $200,000 to the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital Pediatric Charity Care Fund. The contribution will assist families whose children need the special care only UNMCH provides, but whose income does not qualify them for assistance. The funds have come from Smith’s associates’ contributions, customer donations at the check stands and from Smith’s annual vendor golf tournament.
The UNMCH is New Mexico’s only dedicated Children’s Hospital trained to deliver the most advanced neonatology and pediatric care. Nearly 60,000 children receive services each year, over half of whom live outside of the Albuquerque area. The range of care extends from acute illness and trauma to chronic disease and disability.
“We at UNM Hospitals are extremely grateful for the continued support from Smith’s Food and Drug,” said Steve McKernan, UNMH CEO.”
The dollars make an immediate impact and provide children and families with medical care they typically cannot afford. Thanks to Smith’s generosity, many will receive the treatment they are very much in need of.”
Smith’s has a long history of supporting children’s hospitals. In the 1940’s, company founder Dee Smith would collect pennies and deliver them to the nearby children’s hospital. In the past 10 years, Smith’s associates, suppliers and customers have raised over $9 million for Utah’s freestanding children’s hospital’s charity care program.
