Annual Giving Thanks UNMF Volunteers for Help During National Pancake Day

pancake day photoThe UNMF Office of Annual Giving coordinated staffers’ participation in National Pancake Day, which benefited UNM Children’s Hospital, New Mexico’s only Children’s Miracle Network hospital. Since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP restaurants have raised nearly $16 million to support charities in the communities in which they operate. On March 3, 2015, guests from around the country celebrated a “Decade of Giving” with IHOP restaurants’ 10th National Pancake Day and enjoyed a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes at participating locations. In return for the free pancakes, guests were asked to consider leaving a donation for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals©. The total amount raised from the nine stores in the greater Albuquerque area was $31,187.03. This amount includes one month of Children’s Miracle Network icon sales before National Pancake Day, plus “day of” tips as well as credit cards and cash/check donations.

Approximately 14,500 short stack orders (about 43,500 pancakes!) were placed on National Pancake Day from the nine Albuquerque area stores between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Thank you to the following UNMF staff who volunteered on Pancake Day: Cathy Bunch, Kara Clem, Denise Codding, Elizabeth Cochran, Judith Davenport, Jalen Dominguez, Sarah Fair, Sheila Hard, Rod Harder, Annette Hazen, Catherine Malin, Betty Olivas, Margaret Ortega, Monica Peck, Ellen Peterson, Emilia Rivera, Candy Romero, Willie Romero, Jill Slaby, Charlotte Wall-Smith and Jodi Wilson.

Thanks again to everyone who participated and helped get the word out!

UNMF Hosts Luncheon for New Horizon Society Members

UNM Planned Giving donors enjoy the UNM Foundation's Annual New Horizons Society Luncheon in March.

UNM Planned Giving donors enjoy the UNM Foundation’s Annual New Horizons Society Luncheon in March.

On March 17, the UNM Foundation celebrated the generosity of forward-thinking friends and alumni of the University who have included UNM in their estate plans. Known as the New Horizons Society (NHS), members joined UNM President Robert Frank, the UNM Foundation Board of Trustees and academic leaders for the annual NHS luncheon at Albuquerque’s Embassy Suites.

UNMF Director of Gift Planning Sheila Hard opened the luncheon by noting that in the last year alone, 37 new members have been added to NHS ranks, bringing the total number of members to 406. “This is the third University I have served over the course of my career, and I am here to tell you that the support that UNM receives, both from alumni and from community members, far surpasses what I have seen in my other assignments,” Sheila said.

UNM Faculty Senate President and Professor of Piano Pamela Viktoria Pyle emceed the lunch ceremony, which included performances by two UNM music students: Jonathan Keplinger, master of music candidate and recipient of the Thelma Rawcliffe Collaborative Piano Scholarship, and Ian Brody, master of music candidate and recipient of the Abraham Franck Scholarship.

Other speakers included Laura Meurer, a senior Presidential Scholar at UNM’s College of Arts and Sciences; Cat Hubka, MFA candidate in creative writing and a former recipient of the Hillerman-McGarrity Creative Writing Scholarship; Professor Emily Rapp, who holds the Joseph M. Russo Chair in Creative Writing, and NHS member Burck Bailey of Santa Fe.

Development Staff: Please Remember April 8 Deadline for Report of Giving Ideas

Editor’s note: Below is the text of an email sent out to all UNMF Development Staff on March 18. We’ve received very few submissions so far, so please take a few minutes by next Wednesday to suggest one or two of your donors.

It’s time again to provide your input for the next UNM Foundation Annual Report of Giving, to be distributed in late fall. We will again highlight several major donors/gifts in our ongoing Leaders in Philanthropy series.

Please use the link below to suggest one or two donors (individuals, couples, groups, foundations or corporations) who you believe would make an interesting UNMF Leader in Philanthropy. (Suggested donors must have made a gift to UNM during the current fiscal year, July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015.)

Please use this form to suggest donors: https://www.unmfund.org/annual-report-of-giving-donor-story-idea-form/

Ideas must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8.

Please note that while we won’t be able to feature all suggested donors in the report, we will strive to feature remaining nominees in future issues of our Developments newsletter and/or on the UNMF website.
