Longtime UNM Foundation Staff Member to Leave Foundation for Hawaii!

Brenda Barela

Brenda Barela Apodaca

As you probably read in UNM Foundation Associate Vice President of Development Services Annette Hazen’s Monday e-mail, longtime UNM Foundation staff member Brenda Barela Apodaca will be leaving the Foundation, effective August 4, and moving to Hawaii the following week! Brenda has worked in Gift and Records Processing for 17 years, and has been a UNM employee since September 1997, having worked for both the UNM Center for Development and Disability and the UNM Cashier’s Office before joining the Foundation staff. Before she started work at UNM, Brenda also worked for Western Bank, Lovelace Hospital and McDonald’s.

Brenda will be moving to Honolulu, where her daughter, Dyamond, will be stationed with the U.S. Army. The latter recently finished her job training in Virginia and will serve as a petroleum specialist, helping fuel military planes and jets. Brenda’s mother, Nina, also will be moving with the family. “I still can’t believe it,” said Brenda, on the sudden shift in her life situation. “It still seems like a dream. Everything just fell into place, and I now know it is just meant to be, and that’s where I’m supposed to be—with my daughter, and to have the best job in the world, taking care of my grandchildren, Jonathan, 7, and Alaynna, 2.” Brenda went on to say that Albuquerque will always be home to her and that the Foundation staff has become like a second family to her. “Through all the changes over the years, I’ve always given my job 110 percent because I really care about the work we do here.”

As Annette mentioned in her e-mail, “Brenda’s positive attitude, extensive knowledge and bright smile will be truly missed.” Please join us in wishing her “aloha” for a farewell reception this Thursday, August 4, at 3 p.m. in the open area in Suite 203 (near Gift Processing) at the UNM Foundation Central Office. We will miss you, Brenda! We wish you much contentment and happiness in The Aloha State!

Annual Giving Hosts Farewell Reception for Breannon Trujillo

Last Friday, July 29, the Annual Giving staff hosted a reception to say farewell to their student employee, Breannon Trujillo, as she concluded her employment with the UNM Foundation that began in January 2015. In an e-mail sent out last week, Annual Giving Administrative Coordinator Kim Madrid said, “Breannon has been a joy to work with in the Annual Giving office, and we wish her much happiness and success in her future endeavors.” Best of luck, Breannon!

Community Projects Committee Holds 6th Annual School Supply Drive

SSD16 The UNMF Community Projects Committee has begun collecting donations for the Foundation’s 6th Annual School Supply Drive to benefit students at Kit Carson Elementary. The collection will continue until August 12. Collection boxes are located in Suite 108 and on the second floor of Two Woodward Center near the Suite 203 door. Please note: If you’d prefer to donate cash or gift cards, please see committee members Margaret Ortega or Drea Kendall, who are willing to shop for the school supplies for you if you’re unable to do so. In her e-mail announcing this year’s drive last Friday, Drea said, “We’ve partnered with Kit Carson for several years now, and we hope to have another great turnout of supplies!

August is Psoriasis Awareness Month

August is Psoriasis Awareness Month! The National Psoriasis Foundation wants to empower you to take control of your health while raising awareness for the 7.5 million Americans affected by psoriatic disease. Psoriasis is a common skin condition that changes the life cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis causes cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin. The extra skin cells form thick, silvery scales and itchy, dry, red patches that are sometimes painful.

Throughout the month, they will be sharing resources for treating and managing psoriatic disease. Each week, they’ll unlock a new challenge to test your knowledge and provide you with everything you need to live a full, vibrant and active life. Please visit here for helpful information and the challenges.

This Month’s “Round of Appaws” Winner Announced

appaws_logoThe UNM Foundation staff recognition program, “Round of Appaws,” continues to promote the great work accomplished by our employees, staff and students! Out of the many staff members who were acknowledged this past month, one name was randomly drawn by UNM Human Resources at the beginning of August—and the winner is . . . Aaron Currence! Congrats to Aaron, who received a gift card.

The “Round of Appaws” boards are located in both the upstairs and downstairs lobbies at 700 Lomas. You can acknowledge a coworker for helping finish a project; for taking on a new task and doing an amazing job with it; pitching in when help was needed; or going the extra mile on a project that had a lot of challenges. With so many ways to thank someone there is no shortage of “appaws”! Be sure to “paws” and give thanks to a coworker – they just might win a gift certificate next month!

For staff working outside the central office at Two Woodward, you can download the electronic form from SharePoint and submit your praise for a staff member who has been exceptional. Please send completed electronic forms to Gretchen Doyle at Gretchen.Doyle@unmfund.org.
