UNMF Welcomes New Development Director for College of Pharmacy

Tigelaar_MicheleDean Lynda S. Welage and the UNM Foundation welcomed Michele Tigelaar as its new director of development for the College of Pharmacy in late July. Michele comes to us from Albuquerque Public Schools where she worked as a grants writer/manager for the past three years. Before that, she served for seven years as associate director of development-major gifts for Bosque School. A Lobo herself, Michele earned a BA degree in political science from UNM. She and her husband, Brian, have three daughters—and a new German shepherd puppy named Piper. You may reach Michele at Michele.Tigelaar@unmfund.org or 272-3657. Welcome, Michele!

May Our Former Colleague Sachi Rest in Peace

SachiEditor’s note: For those of you who knew and/or worked with Sachi during her years with the UNM Foundation, first as Donor Relations manager and later as a development officer for the College of Arts and Sciences, we sadly provide her obituary below. If anyone would like to send a card to her husband, Dan, you may find his address in Advance under Daniel Mallach.

Sachiko (Sachi) Suzanne Isobe Mallach; October 26, 1972 to July 1, 2015, Aged 42 Years. Resident of West Goshen Township, Penn.

After a courageous 5 year battle with cancer, Sachi passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family.

Sachi was born and raised in New York City and on Long Island, N.Y., and attended Herricks High School in New Hyde Park, N.Y. She graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. with a degree in comparative politics, and also studied at Magdalene College of Cambridge University in England and Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary.

Sachi served as a fund-raiser and development officer for several non-profit institutions. These include Inter Exchange and International House in New York City, and Hackley School in Tarrytown, N.Y. Sachi was the director of development for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M, director of development for the Chester County Historical Society in West Chester, Penn., and most recently the vice president for Institutional Advancement at Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Penn.

Sachi was the elder of two children born to Keisuke and Marjorie Isobe, and was the beloved wife of Dan. Sachi will forever be remembered by her devoted brother, Ken, and her beloved daughter, Katy, along with countless other friends and family around the world who were blessed to know her.

Sachi loved listening to all types of music, playing the piano and violin, hiking and camping, gardening, laughing, being with her family, spending time with animals, having fun with friends and always seeking to learn from someone or visit someplace new. Sachi touched the lives of many people with her smile, optimism and generosity, and maintained her strong heart and sense of humor all the way to the end of her life.

Sachi was interred at Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington, Vermont, where her resting place near Lake Champlain will be graced by the beautiful sunsets over the Adirondack Mountains of New York.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service in Sachi’s honor on Saturday, August 1st, at 11am at Birmingham Friends Meetinghouse, 1245 South Birmingham Road, West Chester PA 19382. If desired, the family requests that any donations be sent to a favorite charity or institution, or to the World Wildlife Fund and Doctors Without Borders.

UNM Foundation Community Involvement Committee

The UNM Foundation Community Involvement Committee is looking for a chair and new members. This is the committee that coordinates volunteer opportunities, and our clothing and school supply drives. We recognize that volunteering provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen both our employees and our local communities. We’re very proud that our employees are generous with their time and energy to give back to a variety of organizations. The UNM Foundation Community Involvement Program, which began in 2013, exists to support and encourage employee volunteerism. Please contact Denise Codding at 277-2954 or Denise.Codding@unmfund.org if you’re interested in chairing or joining this committee.
