Working with Your Dental Plan: Pre-Determination of Benefits

This is a reminder from UNMF HR regarding your dental benefits.  A Pre-Determination of Benefits is recommended for extensive treatment such as root canal therapy, crowns, bridges and periodontal treatment, if such services are included under This Plan. SunLife recommends that your Dental Treatment Plan be submitted to them for review before treatment begins. SunLife will then notify you and your dentist of the benefits payable based upon the Dental Treatment Plan. In determining the amount of benefits payable, consideration will be given to Alternate Dental Treatments that will, as determined by them, accomplish a professionally satisfactory result. If you and your dentist agree to a more costly method of treatment than that determined by SunLife, the excess amount will not be paid by SunLife. Pre-determination of Benefits is not required and failure to submit a Pre-Determination of Benefits does not affect the amount of benefits payable by SunLife.

Ideas to Direct People to UNMF Online Giving Pages

First-time donors may not know how to give to UNM and might visit UNM’s website or the web pages of their school, college, or department. With this in mind, many at UNM are finding ways to help direct donors to the online funds located on the UNM Foundation’s website. Below are some examples of their efforts:

  • The College of Arts & Sciences features a giving graphic on its homepage with a line that reads, “Help us grow. Give to Arts & Sciences.” This graphic links to a donation page. Here, a handy search feature allows users to find existing funds by department, institutes, museums or programs. When parameters are chosen from a drop menu, a listing appears, enabling users to view available funds, with links to corresponding pages on the UNM Foundation website. The listing/search feature is updated as new funds are created.
  • The Lobo Club uses a similar approach on its site. Here, funds are listed with images that help users identify athletic programs. Clickable links to the Foundation’s website are provided as well, making it easy to point donors in the right direction.
  • The UNM School of Law utilizes a broadcast e-mail function. In a year-end holiday e-mail greeting, the question “Have you participated in the Annual Fund for Law?” was included and linked to an information page on the Law School website. Here, a graphic at the top of the page states “Participation Matters. Gift Size Does Not.” A linked button below takes users to a category listing of law funds on the UNM Foundation site.

In some instances, online gifts are “entry” or “test” gifts for donors so they can gauge the process before making a larger, more long-term gift. It can be the first step in developing trust in what hopefully will become a meaningful, long-term partnership. Ease of use is essential. The examples above are just a few ways this can be accomplished.

For more information on the UNM Foundation online fund pages, please contact Jennifer Kemp at Jennifer.Kemp@unmfund.org or Mario Lara at Mario.Lara@unmfund.org.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month

February is the perfect time to help students brush up on good oral health habits with these dental health and literacy resources.

Reports show that American students miss 51 million hours of school every year because of oral health problems. And students who are absent miss critical instruction time—especially in early grades where reading skills are an important focus and the building blocks of future learning. In addition, students who have experienced recent oral health pain are four times more likely to have lower grade point averages than their counterparts who have not.

Please visit the National Education Association website for many wonderful ideas to keep children interested in their oral health.

NM Italian Film Festival Benefitting UNM Children’s Hospital Adds Special Event

Cover-2015-ITALIAN-FILM-FESTIVAL-ARTThe 8th Annual NM Italian Film & Culture Festival, which benefits UNM Children’s Hospital, takes place in Santa Fe on Feb. 5-7 and in Albuquerque on Feb. 8-15. For festival information and tickets, please visit here.

In addition to the usual festivities, the event organizers have announced that on Saturday, February 7, at 1 p.m., acclaimed New York documentary filmmaker, speaker in the humanities and historian Tony De Nonno will bring his engaging “Celebrating New York’s Century-Old Papa Manteo Sicilian Marionette Tradition” to the Land of Enchantment in a very special performance for the children, families and staff of UNM Children’s Hospital. De Nonno will take the children, families and hospital staff on an enlightening journey into the life and legacy of puppeteers Mike and Aida Manteo, their children and grandchildren—a family bound together by the glorious Sicilian marionette tradition than spans a century in America.

Julia Grimes, director of the hospital’s Child Life Program remarked, “Everyone in our Child Life Program is so excited about Tony De Nonno’s visit to the hospital and especially to have him entertain the children and families who are here.” From beginning to end of his presentation with his authentic Papa Manteo Marionette in hand, De Nonno invites the children of all ages in attendance to be active participants by sharing their thoughts, knowledge and ideas as the magical story of Orlando Furioso in the Court of Charlemagne unfolds before their eyes.

“The entire festival organization and I are thrilled that Mr. De Nonno will bring this heroic 1,200 year-old Italian story of values and valor directly to this incredible Children’s Hospital. UNMCH has been our festival’s exclusive beneficiary since 2007, with a donation of nearly $200,000 to date,” said festival managing director, Maria Arancio Berry.
