UNMF Trustee Employee Achievement Award Winners Announced

UNMF_EOY_2014

Left to right: Annette Hazen, Pamina Deutsch, Drea Kendall, Margaret Ortega and Judith Davenport pose with their UNMF Trustee Employer Achievement Award certificates.

A highlight of May’s UNMF Board of Trustees reception was the presentation of the 2013-2014 Board of Trustees Outstanding Employee Achievement Awards. The objective of the award program is to promote, encourage and recognize employee efforts and provide public recognition for outstanding achievements. The awardees were Annette Hazen, Drea Kendall, Judith Davenport, Margaret Ortega and Pamina Deutsch. Supporting info on each employee is below. Congrats, all!

Annette Hazen began her career with the UNM Foundation on September 2, 2003 as the director of Annual Giving, overseeing a staff of five. In 2008, she was promoted to executive director for development services to manage the Annual Giving, Donor Relations and Prospect Research departments. In February 2010 she was again promoted, this time to associate vice president for development and campaign services. Annette has a keen sense of knowing the best way to communicate with our supporters. She’s the absolute best when it comes to handling donor concerns or issues. The Foundation relies on her to lead many ad hoc projects that involve working with University employees, alumni and friends. Annette’s outstanding performance is reflected in her passionate dedication to the Foundation and her personal commitment to the University—she is a true example of our UNM Foundation mission.

Andrea (Drea) Kendall has been with the UNM Development Office and/or UNM Foundation since October 31, 2005. During this time, she has been with the Annual Giving department twice. Drea also served with the UNM School of Engineering as their development coordinator. Currently, she is the executive assistant with HSC Development. A few of her responsibilities include assisting VP Bill Uher with scheduling, coordinating development officer meetings and training sessions. Drea also provides critical assistance to the HSC development staff during their on-boarding process, including delivering training and instruction that is specific to the HSC fund-raising enterprise.

Her most notable contribution this year to the UNM Foundation included the management of our annual United Way Employee Campaign. Under Drea’s vision and leadership, the campaign increased its number of annual donors, including the addition of several first-time donors to our campaign. Additionally, Drea led the campaign to a 24 percent increase in total giving, to a record high of nearly $30,000. Drea personally secured and managed several volunteers, which lead to the success of the campaign. She also solicited in-kind contributions to be used as incentives throughout the campaign. Drea is highly respected by her peers and appreciated by donors because of the way she treats others. She is seen as a very positive person on the team and exhibits a “win-win” philosophy.

Judith Davenport began with the UNM Development Office/UNM Foundation in August 1991. She is also a UNM alumna, having earned her MBA in 2000. Throughout her tenure, Judith has worked in a variety of roles including assistant director of Annual Giving, manager of Gift Processing, and her current role as manager of endowment relations within the Donor Relations Department. As a result of this experience, Judith possesses a wealth of knowledge about both the UNM Foundation and the University, and is a valuable resource and “go to” person. Judith’s role as manager of endowment relations is pivotal, particularly as the Foundation’s emphasis on endowment dollars increases. She is responsible for financial reporting and stewardship of existing endowments, as well as setting up new funds and endowment agreements. Throughout the endowment process, Judith diligently works with donors, development officers, faculty, staff and campus and Foundation leadership to ensure that donor intent is clearly defined and maintained. This year, Judith added to the fund-raising effort by closing two major gifts, valued at almost $800,000!

Margaret Ortega is a loyal UNMF employee and proud UNM alumna! She began her career with the UNM Development Office/UNM Foundation as a development assistant in the Annual Giving Department in March 2001. Margaret earned a BA in communication and journalism from UNM in 2000. Currently, she is the associate director of Annual Giving and has the primary responsibility for the comprehensive direct marketing program, including telephone, mail and email solicitations; in addition, she manages the Cherry & Silver Society, which recognizes continuous giving. Margaret herself is a member of the Cherry & Silver Society, having continuously given to UNM since 2001. As a result of Margaret’s leadership and hard work, there have been several notable successes in Annual Giving this past year, including: membership in the Cherry & Silver Society exceeded 800, credit card participation rate in telemarketing hit 16 percent, and combined direct marketing revenue reached $500,000 in cash and pledges. In addition to her work responsibilities, Margaret led the UNM Foundation’s United Way Campaign in 2012, raising over $30,000 and exceeding the participation goal by 23 percent. She actively participates (and often leads) various special events and volunteer activities for the Foundation, including school supply drives, toy drives, and volunteering at Roadrunner Food Bank.

Pamina Deutsch was selected as the UNM Foundation Board of Trustees Outstanding UNM Partner Award. Pamina is the University’s policy and administrative planning director. She assumed this position in February 2012, following 19 years of excellent service to UNM as senior paralegal in the University’s Counsel’s office. In her 21 years at the University, she has worked on complex issues and solved problems across both sides of Lomas Blvd. Much of her best work will never be recognized because she solved or prevented problems that few knew existed. With her appointment to the policy office, Pamina became more visible and conducted her work in plain view of the entire University community. Working with groups of content and process experts, Pamina crafts effective policies that are adopted by the Regents or by the administration.

Over the past year, Pamina has invested significant amounts of time and energy to finalize policies that facilitate the University’s ease of interaction with the Foundation. One of these policies, the implementation of a comprehensive gift policy prepared from the University’s side of the gifting activities, was accomplished after countless hours of meetings, drafts and discussion—even negotiations with more than 20 individuals who knew passionately only their “piece of the elephant.” The result is a thoughtful, accurate and clear policy which will help the University know the “whole elephant” of giving and receiving and the respective roles of the Foundation and the University. With this policy in place, we were able to negotiate the Mandelman-Ribak Foundation gift, which brings $8 million in resources for the Foundation for the University. Thank you, Pamina, for using your excellent skills to help the University community understand the Foundation.

Congratulations again to each of you for your outstanding achievements.

5 Ways to Promote Online Giving Pages

Many colleges, departments, and programs have established online giving pages to encourage donations year round.  You can help promote these online giving pages in a variety of ways.

1)    Include a link to the online fund in your email signature.
2)    At the end of a newsletter article, add a link to a specific online fund that is related to the article’s topic.
3)    Include a link to a related online fund in communication that you are already sending, such as a broadcast email.
4)    Add a hyperlink to the department, college or program website that directly links to a related online fund page.
5)    Post a list of links to online fund pages on the appropriate college, department and/or program website so your website visitors can easily find a fund and make a gift.

These online fund pages are only useful if they are promoted. Be sure to share the link with the right people at the right time.  Do you have other ideas on how to utilize or promote these online funds?  Send your ideas to Jennifer.kemp@unmfund.org so they can be included in the next DTales!
