UNMF Welcomes New Development Director for School of Medicine

Smith-Betsy

Betsy Skye Smith

Betsy Skye Smith joined the UNM Foundation as a director of development for the UNM School of Medicine in mid-February. She comes to us from the American Red Cross New Mexico Chapter where she served for almost six years in several key development and management positions including regional chief development officer and major gifts officer. Originally from Fanwood, N.J., Betsy graduated from Lehigh University with a BA degree in international careers with a focus on international business and Latin America as a geographic concentration, and a minor in social relations.

Betsy has more than 23 years of development and communications experience in the non-profit sector. She moved to Albuquerque in 2006 when she was appointed as development and external relations director at Explora. Betsy has also held development positions at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter and the JDRF (formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International).

Betsy said that she has a great love of family including her mother, Harriet, who resides with her now in New Mexico; their cat, Dallas, and dog, Bella. Betsy is one of five children with two sisters and two brothers. She has 13 nieces and nephews, with a 14th great niece soon to arrive. Betsy also said she has a passion for lifelong learning and creating art in multimedia. She also enjoys the outdoors; speaking Spanish; volunteerism including serving as one of the leaders of the 1993 National Caravan to El Salvador, and also was honored to be a Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient.

Esther Trillo, an international student graphic designer in the UNMF Marketing and Communications Department since November 2013, has resigned her position, effective January 2015. In late February Esther moved to Pensacola, Fla., to attend the University of West Florida. While she may return home to Spain afterward, Esther said she really hopes to return to Albuquerque at some point. She said she wanted to thank all of us at the UNM Foundation “for being part of the great experience that I’ve had in the States.” We miss Esther already and wish her all the best!

The 11th Annual 100.3 The Peak Radiothon to benefit UNM Children’s Hospital was held Feb. 19-20 and raised $201,396. This annual fund-raiser helps the hospital provide the most advanced and specialized pediatric care available to more than 60,000 children from every county in New Mexico and neighboring areas.

Radiothon organizers and staff thank the 1,500 donors who supported this year’s Children’s Miracle Network fund-raiser. Thank you to all who donated, supported and listened to the radio during the two-day, 12-hour-a-day live Radiothon last month.

The Radiothon was broadcast live on KPEK-FM 100.3 – The Peak from the 6th floor of UNM Children’s Hospital. Jackie, Tony, Donnie and other on-air personalities hosted the event for two days from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., talking with patients, doctors, nurses and listeners. Several recorded stories of local families treated at UNMCH were played to engage the listeners. The Radiothon supports the Children’s Miracle Network Fund at UNM Children’s Hospital.

Radiothon sponsors, in order of amount raised, include: Sandia Office Supply, First Financial Credit Union, Azuma Tepan Grill, Saga Gymnastics, Chipotle, Jimmy John’s, Chick-fil-A and Pepsi.

We thank 100.3 the Peak for participating with this amazing effort for 11 years as well as the Foundation staff who helped during this two-day event.
