American Indian Language Preservation Fund

Currently, most Native languages are at risk. One hundred thirty-five of the 155 Native languages spoke in North America are endangered. Recently, pueblos and tribes have become increasingly aware of the risk of language loss. Many have begun to develop programs to preserve Native languages.

Native language teachers, administrators and tribal members in New Mexico’s 22 tribes need training and support in their communities in Native language preservation. The UNM College of Education is the only entity in New Mexico that currently provides training and outreach services to tribes on a year-round basis. You can make a difference with your gift. The future survival of New Mexico’s Indigenous cultures depends on the continued transmission of tribal languages from one generation to another.
