Agora Crisis Center

What is Agora?

Our mission is to provide free, compassionate support to anyone in need. Since 1970, we have provided an important service; we are a volunteer-run warmline and crisis line. People from all over the country can call and talk to us about anything from venting about a rough day at work to being in a crisis. When you call us, you will get in touch with a volunteer who has 40 hours of training to be able to know how to best support the members of our community. We are grateful to have 125+ volunteers running our helpline.

We provide education to the community through our Suicide Awareness and Intervention Lessons (SAILs). From classrooms to workplaces and other non-profits, we are happy to offer our free training to educate the public about how to talk to someone you love about suicide.

Our services not only benefit our callers and those who participate in our SAILs. Many volunteers who join Agora are future healthcare workers, therapists/counselors, and social workers. Agora provides the foundational crisis-intervention training and leadership opportunities used in their personal and professional lives.

Agora is a student organization at UNM and relies heavily on donations from the community.

Why is Agora important?

In 2019, almost 50,000 people died by suicide; New Mexico has consistently been in the top 5 states with the highest suicide rates in the country for the past 15 years. Prevention starts with education; supporting Agora allows us to grow our reach in the community.

Thank you so much for thinking of Agora! Please feel free to contact us at agora@unm.edu with any questions about us or our services.
